Age: 30
Relationship Status: Single
Length of Illness: 2 1/2 years
Diagnosis: Most likely VVS

Factors Leading to Pain: I've have been dealing with this for a few years and it has gotten worse. If I am aroused or have sex I will have a lot of pain. I will normally dry up, swell up (most of the time), and feel a lot of pain, right at the opening. Swimming in a pool seems to make things worse too. I will be "dry" for days after swimming in a pool. Whether it is a chlorine pool or a salt water pool, it doesn't matter. In the beginning I only felt it when I had sex and it wasn't every time. As time went by, it became worse. Now, I feel it all the time and I don't have to have sex to know it hasn't gone away. On a normal day, it feels like there is something in my vagina. Like a tampon. Normally I feel it more at night and I notice I am always tightening myself. Any type of foreplay bothers me, tight underwear bothers me, I feel very tight when I have had foreplay, and even when I get examined I feel sore or feel pain for the rest of the day. Sometimes it's for a few days.

Causes of Illness: I became sexually active when I was 18 years old. I hardly ever got yeast infections, bacterial infections etc. I'm going to be honest, I loved sex! I could have sex 5 times a day if I wanted to. It didn't matter if I was sick or not. Some of the case studies I've read, some of the women have always had this. I'm not one of them. I DON'T think that birth control caused my problems because I have been on BC since I was 14 years old and I did go off BC for 3 months and nothing changed. 3 1/2 years ago I had my son and my body went right back to normal. Right before my symptoms started 2 1/2 years ago, my ex-husband and I had separated. When my symptoms started I was dating and having sexual intercourse with someone new. The very first time we had sex, I knew there was a problem. I swelled right up and became very itchy. I got an yeast infection right away. Over the counter stuff didn't work so then I went to the doctor and they gave me diflucan. Now, in the past I would take a diflucan pill and by the next day I would feel better. That didn't happen. It's been 2 1/2 years and I have had chronic yeast infections and bacterial infections. It has been 3 months since the last time I had an yeast infection, bacterial infection, and bladder infection and that was all due to me having sex for the first time in many months. I used to think that just sex was causing my problems, but I did get infections without having sex. I firmly believe that my ongoing yeast infection is what caused my (most likely) VVS. I also found out that I have an STD. Due to the relationship I had after my separation. I don't feel that this is causing my problems though. I have genital warts.

I have been pretty much single since this has started. I've become very depressed. I'm a single mother who hardly goes out, I now have a STD, and I can't have sex. I went from loving sex to having no sex drive what so ever. I don't even want a guy to touch me because I'm afraid of the pain I will experience. I'm 30 years old and I feel like this has taken over my life.

I have been to 5 different doctors for my problems. The doctor I am seeing now is the one who thinks I have VVS. He told me to look it up and see what I think. I think he is the first doctor to really listen to me. I've had other doctors in the past ask me if this is in my head or have people told me this is what I should feel. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I knew I wasn't crazy.

  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Pain
  • Pain on Contact
  • Inflammation
  • Swelling
  • Infections
  • Pain During/After Intercourse
  • Pain with Other Penetration (Tampons etc.)
  • Very little discharge
  • Very bad night sweats. (I will wake up soaked most mornings)

  • Was on that for about 3 months on and off in the beginning, which caused me to have other issues. I started to get hemorrhoids because of the new issues. Doctor took me off of that and then I was put on creams for my yeast infections and I continue to use them when I have an yeast infection. I haven't had one in 3 months.

  • Different Creams for Bacterial Infections

  • I have been on so many creams through out the years, to be honest I don't remember them all. My last bacterial infection was 3 months ago.

  • No sugar diet

  • I went on that for month in a half. I couldn't deal and I didn't see any changes.

  • Acidophilus

  • For the yeast infections. I continue to take them, just in case, but I honestly feel like they don't do anything.

  • No Birth Control

  • I went off of my BC for 3 months and no changes.

  • Coconut Oil (Organic)

  • I used it for personal lube. (Daily and sexually) It didn't really help.

  • Raw Probiotics Vaginal Care

  • These are pills I take daily and I feel they are helping a little. I've noticed I have a little bit more discharge than usual. I've been taking them almost 2 months now.

  • Astroglide

  • Personal lube. I bought it for if and when I ever have sex, but I haven't had sex yet, so I don't know if it helps. I have used it a few times when I feel dry. It helps only for a little bit. I will update if I use it when I have sex.

  • RePhresh

  • My doctor told me to use this after I have sex, swim, or have my period. I haven't used it yet. This is to help restore my PH levels.

  • Estrogen Cream

  • My doctor told me to used this every other day for a week then 3 times a week, then 2 days a week. I did that and I still feel the same.

  • On Birth Control that doesn't give me my period.

  • My doctor wants to see if it was my period that was giving me some of my infections. They acted up right after my period sometimes. As of the past 3 months I haven't had any infections but I also haven't had sex.

  • Pads vs. Tampons

  • Okay, so I had a few doctors tell me to use pads. Not to use tampons because that might be what was causing my infections etc. So I did that for a year to a year in a half. Then, the last two doctors I have seen say I should use tampons because you don't want more moisture because yeast loves it. So I wore tampons. I did that until my latest doctor put me on the bc that makes me not have my period. The sad thing is that Tampons really bother me now. They never had before.

  • Wearing no underwear at night.

  • One of the doctors I saw told me not to wear underwear at night. This was to help with my yeast infections. It gives my vagina a chance to breathe and air out. I continue to do this. I think it has helped.
